Gi Jiu-Jitsu

The traditional form of jiu-jitsu, trained in the kimono (gi). Grips, lapels and cloth-based control create a slower, more technical game.

What is Gi jiu-jitsu?

Gi jiu-jitsu is the traditional form of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, trained wearing the kimono (gi). The gi adds grips — lapels, sleeves, pants — which creates a slower, more technical and positional game than No-Gi.

Why train in the gi?

  • Technical depth — cloth grips create countless control positions
  • Self-defense transfer — people wear clothing, so gi grips are practical
  • Slower pace — more time to think and problem-solve
  • Tradition — connect with the roots of the art

Who should train Gi?

Anyone. Many beginners start in the gi because the slower pace makes it easier to learn. But experienced grapplers also train gi for the technical depth and competition opportunities.
